GDA Clocktower

This project involved the priority structural stabilisation and fabric repair works to annexed rear buildings of the main clocktower building as well as some minor works to main clocktower building. All buildings are protected structures.

The works included the following: stripping of existing roof coverings including asbestos slates and rainwater goods; substantial roof timber repairs / re-construction; new Penrhyn blue black natural slate roof finishes; new lead flat roofs, valleys, and flashings; new cast iron rainwater goods; new bespoke aluminium rooflights; new fall arrest systems.

Repairs / refurbishment / reconstruction of chimneys; repairs / refurbishment / reconstruction of parapets; removal of sand and cement render from existing elevations; building fabric repairs / reconstructions of stonework & brickwork facades including re-pointing; new lime harling render with smooth lime feather edges reveals.

Temporary Works and structural repairs to chapel elevation; cut stone replacement and repairs to formal chapel windows; removal of existing stained-glass windows; refurbishment off site and refitting; installation of new steel windows.

Joinery repairs to existing selected historic timber windows; safe removal and storing of internal joinery to facilitate opening up works and isolation from dry rot; careful removal of sections of internal plasterwork to walls and ceilings including decorative mouldings; store sections of plaster on site; lath and plaster ceiling stabilisation / consolidation; minor new internal lime wall and ceiling repairs to occupied areas of building; substantial repair works to timber ceilings and beams including splicing and repairs to arched ceilings in chapel.

Works were completed in live university campus; with parts of the building remaining operational and to a tight schedule to meet planning enforcement requirements.
